Getting the Most Out of Your Lathe

Instructor ~ Phil Lowe

August 16, 2010 ~ August 20, 2010

This weeklong class will open your eyes to all the possibilities of working with a lathe including spindle turning and faceplate turning.  While focusing on spindle turning, you will learn the grinding techniques for the proper angles of parting tools, gouges, and skews, as well as the honing of the edges needed to make clean proper cutting.  This will present you with the opportunity to learn the safe, correct setup and sequence of cuts to transform basic shapes into beautiful ornamental turnings.  Using the techniques of making cove, parting, and round over cuts, you will be taught to combine them to create complex turnings for candle sticks, lamps, and many more useful and exquisite objects. Another focus of this course is faceplate turning.  With this you will come to understand the set up of faceplate turnings, which are sawn from circular form.  These are the basics for table tops, trays, and lamp bases.  You will apply the grinding and sharpening skills to your tools which will largely contribute to the success of your project and will open up a multitude of faceplate turning possibilities.  Not only will spindle and faceplate turning be covered in this course, but you will also explore the use of chucks to turn knobs and bowls, using a lathe to bore holes, creating index wheels for reeds and flutes, and laying out spirals.  This class is a great opportunity to spend time with nationally known woodworker and author Phil Lowe.
