Lune Table
It’s Design and Construction
Instructor ~ Chuck Phillips
July 26, 2010 ~ July 30, 2010
Bricking and veneering techniques combined, can produce
great shapes with highly decorative surfaces that will dramatically elevate
your level of work. This experience gives the students the means to produce round,
oval and asymmetrical curved work that can make table forms so pleasing. The
class covers the drawing of a full size layout for a semi-circular table. From patterns
generated from the layout, segments are sawn, joined and patterned cut to
obtain the rims shape. Hammer veneering techniques, which have been used for
hundreds of years using hot hide glue, will be used to attach the figured decorative
veneers to the curved apron surfaces. Learn to build the simple but effective
jigs for cutting the bridal joints which are used for fastening the legs to the
rails. Also gain the knowledge of making of a simple banding to surround and
accent the veneered panels. Exploring these processes creates all kinds of
possibilities for various curved forms and decorative elements, which will add
to your vocabulary of design options.
