Acanthus Leaf Knee Carving

Instructor ~ Phil Lowe

July 19, 2010 ~ July 23, 2010

The finest Rococo furniture was embellished with great carving. This class will explore the design, of a cabriole leg and the graceful flow of the acanthus leaf. Students can expect to head home with the patterns and the “know how” entailed in carving this 18th century classic. After a trip to the museum for a study session to collect some digital images of some knee carving, the students will try their hand at designing this elaborate motif. Then working from a pattern that Phil designs the students will cut out and shape a cabriole leg followed by the layout and carving of the acanthus leaf ornamentation. Phil will guide you through the series of steps, pointing out the various grain directions that you will encounter as you carve this splendid American motif.
