Instructor ~ Chuck Phillips

August 16, 2010 ~ August 20, 2010

Traditional furniture requires a wide range of joinery skills.  Most people learn basic dovetail and mortise and tenon joints first, but these methods can be extended to cover many complex applications.  Learning to cut these joints with hand tools will improve your bench skills, and help you understand machine tool approaches.

In this class we will work on a series of sample joints drawn from traditional furniture.  Exercises will include:  Slot dovetails, used for drawer dividers

Dovetails for turned tripod table bases.

Housed and tapered (sliding) dovetails, used in case construction

                 Angled dovetails and angled tenons

Curved parts with dovetails or mortise and tenon joints

Each of these exercises will be broken down into a series of simple steps, explaining layout and cutting strategies.  Typical uses for each joint will be explained, along with design considerations.  Related machine tool methods will be demonstrated.

The skills you learn in this class will be helpful with many projects and gives you a chance to explore complex joinery with hand tools and machine tools.
